Linden Woods Christmas

Explore Winnipeg--the most beautiful, most repulsive city in the world--through the photography of Bryan Scott.

That explains this blog in a nutshell. Keep in mind, though, that it was born out of a passion for three things: photography, architecture, and most importantly, Winnipeg. I hope that the photos presented here depict a Winnipeg that often goes unseen and unnoticed; a multi-layered, architecturally rich city that is more than just the snow and mosquitoes for which it is (sadly) most well-known.

Prints are now available through the print-on-demand website imagekind.com. Click the Purchase Prints link at the top to check it out. Many prints will be added over the next while, so check back often.

Additionally, if you don't see the prints you're interested in, let me know and I will make them available as soon as possible. Prints are available in many different paper stocks. I recommend Premium Photo Glossy (for glossy) or Somerset Velvet Fine Art (for matte).

A Winnipeg Love Hate book is also now available. Click the Book link at the top of the page for more information.

Special thanks goes to the University of Manitoba's Winnipeg Building Index (wbi.lib.umanitoba.ca/WinnipegBuildings), my regular source for building names and completion dates (which appear in brackets).

I live in the Chicago area and I must say that a city of almost 700,000 people in the middle of nowhere, with even more godawful weather than what I have to endure, is quite fascinating. I will be visiting your wonderful city sometime in 2009. I really am looking forward to it, thanks in part to your great photography.

I just found your website and having lived in Winnipeg my entire life I have to say that your shots have brought out a different side of Winnipeg that I've never noticed before. Really amazing photos! (I'm actually quite envious, I only wish I could be that good)

I love this site!

I once met a cab driver in Victoria who was originally from Somalia, and he told me about how he spent his very first night on Canadian soil, in Winnipeg, on a frigid January day.

He asked his friend "Is this a Muslim city?" His friend responded "why would you say that?", and he replied: "Well, everyone here is completely covered from head to toe except for their eyes!"

Man, you gotta love that...

I grew up in Wpg and now live in Edmonton...I love this site and your beautiful photography! It's amazing. At least Wpg isn't ashamed of it's old architecture the way Edmonton is...

Impressive site. I have deep love for my hometown of Winnipeg, even though growing up I looked forward to moving away as quickly as possible (and now live in Vancouver). These images truly capture the beauty, the mood and the feel of life in the Manitoba capital.

Your shots are stunning.
The content, the composition, the light!

What do you shoot with?

I LOVE to see the technical info on each shot (2.8 at 1/30 for example) and what was done to it digitally.

Thanks Jac.

If you click on any photo, you will be taken to that photo's Flickr page. Some of the shots will have the technical details posted alongside them.

Many won't, though. These ones are HDR images (high dynamic range), which are composites of several shots, each shot at a different exposure. It's a really interesting technique that not only enhances the dynamic range of a scene, but also brings out details and textures that get completely lost with traditional images.

I shoot with a Pentax K-7, by the way. Up until recently I was shooting with a Pentax K10, and occasionally I'll shoot with a Panasonic Lumix LX3.

Another thing: The HDR shots are tagged with HDR.

Hey Bryan,

De-lurking to say how much I love your dedication to your work and your city.

Hope I have a reason to see Winnipeg in person someday; until then, your images are the next best thing!

Hey Bryan, I bought the book for my 80 year old father. He loves it. I have not had a chance to see it as I am now living in Toronto, but he assured me its fantastic.
Keep up the good work and take care.

Wow! This site is great. I live in Winnipeg but am from Ashern - about two hours north of the city, pretty close to Steep Rock. I am taking courses at PrairieView in Winnipeg, and am absolutely in love with all of these photos. Just awesome. Great work!

Wow! I've lived in winnipeg my whole life, and I've always seen this city as a beautiful, mysterious place. Mysterious because I guess I'm still a kid and I honestly don't get around the city much, and I'm too young to have a night life. These photos really capture that feeling of...magic, I guess, for lack of a better word. You're photography is beautiful.

I've never seen these places with the eyes of your pics. I live in Winnipeg since 2008 and I hate this city. I dream with the day my husband will decide we should move from here. However; your photos are wonderful. I wish I had your eyes to see this farm old town with a better perspective.

Amazing photographs. It gives the city a look I've never really seen. I actually don't live in Winnipeg, I live about an hour outside of it, in Gimli. Thought I've been living in Manitoba for the past 5 years, since I was 16, and been to Winnipeg many, many times, I 've still haven't seen most of the city. Beautiful work! Can't wait to see more.
