Portage Avenue (1895).
Since renovations were completed a year or two ago, it's still fantastic to see Wesley Hall looking like new again. This, after watching the building crumble for years and years.

Yes, it's beautiful. Unfortunately, it's a facade. The back of the building wasn't even repaired the last time I saw it, so you can't count on the revitalization being done for purposes of maintenance but rather, keeping up appearances. I don't even know what the stuff that they plastered this building with is called. It doesn't look authentic or turn of the century. I'm also worried that it's cheap and won't stand the test of time.
Winnipeg needs to take a hint from European revitalization projects. UW definitely cut corners.
You're right. There's definitely something inauthentic about the materials they've used, but I'll take that over scaffolding and chunks of fallen materials all around the place.
You've really managed to capture this building well, much like the castles and fortresses I grew up surrounded by in Krakow! For something so inauthentic, it really looks otherwise. Well done.
I've fallen in love with your blog! I live in Montreal now and realize, my new city will never compare to architecturally rich Winnipeg, which is so underappreciated for its many gems. These pictures make me miss everything.

Holy smokes, this is the quote of 2008. Justyna , you just gave every urban pegger a hardon.
You gotta be kidding , right ?
Justyna shouldn't comment about things that she knows nothing about!!! The Wesley Hall building was not cheaply done in fact, it is more structually sound then before. I do agree that the U of W definately has a lot of updating to do but it is an old building run by a SHITTY politican who cares nothing more then about write ups about himself in the paper not about what needs to be repaired or updated....for the students that pay to go there.
