Downtown skyline as seen from St. Boniface.
Okay. I'll admit it: I had no idea what these clouds were called. I had to look them up, and had never even heard the word "mammatus" before I did. I guess that shows how rarely they're seen over Winnipeg.

Holy Moly!
I was at the Ex grounds in Headingly the day of the huge tornado in Elie, a couple of years ago. The clouds looked just like that.
Oh, so glad you got a shot of those. I remember that evening; unbelievably strange, beautiful and ominous.
I was going to say, those are mammatus clouds, they are a sign of atmospheric instability. Let me guess, you took this photo on or around June 22, 2007? That was the last time I saw (and took photos of) mammatus clouds in Winnipeg, the F5 Elie tornado took place later that day.
August 12, 2009.
Here are the clouds from that day of the Elie tornado (not nearly as artful as the picture on this blog, though)

Whoah...that's a pretty crazy shot.
The clouds looked like they were going to drip down onto the ground.
